Hang woman: Everyone Loves a Good Hanging

K R Meera is a well known writer in Malayalam literature. The former Malayala manorama journalist penned several books which gained much popularity among Malayalam literature world. She won several awards including kerala sahithya academy award for her famous novel Aarachar (hang woman) . The novel translated into english as well as in Tamil. The English version was done by J Devika . After the much acclaimed popularity of, Aarachar Meera engaged herself into latest novel ‘’ sooryane aninja sthree’’.

Few days before one of my friend gifted me the book Aarachar. For that book I was waiting for a long time. From the very first moment I started to read.  The book is about executioners of India. The main protagonist chetana is the younger daughter of executioner Fanifooshan Gridha Mallik. Chetana is a strong determined lady with immense courage, who struggled to inherit her profession. Fortunately or unfortunately she becomes the first hang woman of India. The twenty-two year old girl accepts the challenge of being a hang woman. One of the main reasons that forced her to do so is her long lineage of executioners.  Chetana learned building of gallows, from womb itself. It shows she has the lineage of her legends.

Although she earned high distinction in plus two, her poor living condition became a barren for studies. But within her education she learned to be strong and talks in a different manner which attracts others, maybe she earned that quality from her father. Fanifooshan talks well before camera, because he knew how to market his rare job opportunities.

Chetana became the hangwoman of Yatheemdra Nath Banergy. The story talks about the period of execution, and the different incidents chetana has faced. Inbetween this tough time, Sanjeev Kumar Mithra a media person comes into her life as a saviour. But actually he did all favours on her with a particular motive. Those days chetana come in contact with current issues around her.  In actual meaning she becomes the part of society.

The story is narrated by the central character Chetana herself. It goes through the mental stress and struggle of Chetana, at mean time it talks about death, suicide, its good and bad deeds, death penalty etc. Like we said Chetana is a strong lady, although she is not at all educated, she is capable of forming opinion about things happening around. When Maruthi Prasad Yadav (shop owner where she had worked for two months) tried to molest her, she responds immediately. When Sanjeev ( media person, with him her father had agreement )  did same thing with her initially she reciprocates. But gradually she fell in love with the same person. Once her dhakuma (grandmother) says like this – ‘’a man can love woman only when she loves him, but a woman loves man in his hatred too’’. The relation of Chetana, and Sanjeev is somewhat like that.

The story is about women power. The book is not written in a feminist viewpoint. The protagonist Chetana is one among us. But the story is not told by anyone before. Aarachar is enough worth to read, it will force you to think about happenings around us.

Burning childhood...

Recently I had gone through a piece of news about child marriage that was posted in face book. I was not startled. Because before also I heard lots of news like this. 40year old marries 13 year old girl, 9 year old boy and 3 year old girl get married etc. Such news is become common among the rural areas of India. Whenever I get to know such things I only thinks why these happening in our so called educated society? Why we are refusing the kid’s right for proper education and living condition?

In 1978 the minimum age for marriage in India has been fixed, 18 for a girl and 21 for boy. But across the India the rule is violating. Such child brides lost their rights for education and better living education. Child marriages are mainly occurs in poor families. In many of the northern states dowry is given from boy’s side instead of girl’s side. There is a common believe that grown up girls won’t get suitable groom. Their poor living condition, believes forced them to commit child marriages, lack of education is also one of the factor for child marriage.

Come to the news which I had gone through is about a 13 year old girl wrote to her school principle to request stop her marriage. The girl, named Duli Hembrom, is a Class 9 student at Milan Mithi Uchha Vidyalaya in Gudabanda in the Jamshedpur district of Jharkhand. She wrote this letter after failing to convince her parents to stop wedding. It is clear from the letter that she is so much worried for her future education.

“I took an oath at the time of admission that I will not get married before I turn 18. I do not wish to get married early.” These are the disturbing words of a 13-year old girl in a letter to her school principal.Education is a basic right of any child in India if it is a girl or boy. Despite being illegal, child marriage is common practice in many parts of rural India. Jharkhand, the state in which Hembrom lives, is one of the worst affected by child marriage in India, with more than 40 percent of women married or in a union by the age of 18, according to UN statistics. The most recent statistics show that only 11 people were convicted for the offence in 2010.

Child brides are losing a normal life. Such girls are becoming mother prematurely which causes lots of health problems. Many of the child brides died due to pregnancy problems. Beside these girls are treating so badly in their ‘sasural’. Several states of India have introduced incentives to delay marriages. For example, the state of Haryana introduced the so-called Apni Beti, Apna Dhan program in 1994, which translates to “My daughter, my wealth”. It is a conditional cash transfer programme dedicated to delaying young marriages by providing a government paid bond in her name, payable to her parents, in the amount of INR25000 (US$400), after her 18th birthday if she is not married.If we try together we can abolish such atrocities from our land. Girls are not a curse they are boon, through which India’s legacy will going on.

വിശ്വസ്തതയുടെ പ്രതീകമാണ് നായ്ക്കൾ. നേപ്പാളിലെ ഒരു വിഭാഗം ജനത ആ വിശ്വസ്തതയ്ക്കു പകരമായി നായ്ക്കളെ പൂജിക്കാൻ ഒരു ദിവസം മാറ്റി വയ്ക്കാറുണ്ട് . നേപ്പാളിലെ നേവാർ വിഭാഗത്തിൽപ്പെട്ടവരാണ് ഇത്തരത്തിൽ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരു ആചാരം വച്ച് പുലർത്തുന്നവർ . തിഹാർ എന്നാണ് ഈ ആഘോഷത്തിന്റെ പേര് . കുക്കുർ പൂജ എന്നൊരു പേരും കൂടിയുണ്ട് ഈ ചടങ്ങിനു.  അഞ്ചു ദിവസം നീണ്ടു നിൽക്കുന്ന ആഘോഷത്തിന്റെ രണ്ടാം ദിനമാണ്  നായ്ക്കളെ പൂജിക്കുന്നത് .  നായ്ക്കളെ യമരാജന്റെയ് സന്ദേശ വാഹകരായാണ് നേപ്പാൾ ജനത കണക്കാക്കുന്നത് . പൂജാ ദിവസം നായ്ക്കൾക്ക് തിലകക്കുറി അണിയിച്ചു, പുഷ്പഹാരം അണിയിച്ചു  ഇഷ്ട ഭക്ഷണം യഥേഷ്ടം വിളമ്പുന്നു . അങ്ങിനെ നേപ്പാൾ ജനത നായ്ക്കളോടുള്ള നന്ദി അറിയിക്കുന്നു . നായ്ക്കൾ മാത്രമല്ല ഇവിടെ പൂജിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് . കാക്കയും പശുവും ഒക്കെ ഈ ആഘോഷത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ് . ഉൽസവത്തിന്റെയ് ആദ്യ ദിനം കാക്കയ്ക്കും , രണ്ടാം ദിനം നായ്ക്കൾക്കും, മൂന്നാം ദിനം ഗോക്കൾക്കും, നാലാം ദിനം കാളയ്ക്കും അഞ്ചാം ദിനം മനുഷ്യനുമായി തിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു . ലോകത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗത്ത് സാധു മൃഗങ്ങളെ ആഹാരത്തിനു ഇരയാകുമ്പോൾ മറ്റൊരു ഭാഗത്ത് അവർ ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു . വൈക്കം മുഹമ്മദ്‌ ബഷീറിന്റെ വാക്കുകൾ ആണ് ഓർമ്മ വരുന്നത് ” ഈ ഭൂമി നാം മനുഷ്യർക്ക്‌ മാത്രം അവകാശപ്പെട്ടതല്ല , ഇവിടെ ജീവിക്കാൻ എല്ലാവർക്കും അവകാശമുണ്ട്‌ ”.

അങ്കത്തിനൊരുങ്ങി അരുവിക്കര

കേരള രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിലെ നിർണ്ണായകമായ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ വഴിത്തിരിവായേക്കാവുന്നജനവിധിയിലേക്കാണ് ജൂണ്‍ 27 വിരൽ ചൂണ്ടുന്നത് . അരുവിക്കര ജൂണ്‍ 27 ണ് പോളിംഗ്ബൂത്തിലെത്തുമ്പോൾ ഇടതിനും വലതിനും ബി ജെ പി ക്കും അത് നിർണ്ണായകമാണ് .കേരള രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിൽ മൂവരുടെയും ഭാവി എന്താകുമെന്നു തീർച്ചപ്പെടുത്താൻ.കേരളത്തിൽ നടക്കുന്ന 40 മത് ഉപതിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പും അരുവിക്കരയിലെ 15 മത്തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുമാണ് വരാനിരിക്കുന്നത് .

2011 ൽ ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടി സർക്കാർ അധികാരത്തിൽ വന്ന ശേഷം പിറവത്തുംനെയ്യാറ്റിൻകരയിലും നടന്ന ഉപതിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകൾക്കൊന്നും  ലഭിക്കാത്ത രാഷ്ട്രീയ - ജന -മാധ്യമ ശ്രദ്ധ എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് അരുവിക്കരയ്ക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്നു ? ഇടതിനും വലതിനുമൊപ്പംചാഞ്ഞ ചരിത്രമുണ്ട് അരുവിക്കരയ്ക്ക് . കഴിഞ്ഞ തദ്ദേശസ്വയംഭരണ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽമണ്ഡലത്തിലെ 4 പഞ്ചായത്തുകൾ ഇടതിനും 4 പഞ്ചായത്തുകൾ  വലതിനുമൊപ്പം നിന്നു.

1991 വരെ ആർ എസ് പി അടക്കി വാണിരുന്ന ആര്യനാട് മണ്ഡലത്തിൽ കോണ്‍ഗ്രസിലെയുവതുർക്കിയായിരുന്ന ജി കാർത്തികേയന്റെ വരവ് പുതിയ രാഷ്ട്രീയ സമവാക്യങ്ങൾസൃഷ്ടിച്ചു . 1991 മുതൽ 2011 വരെ ജി കെ മണ്ഡലം നിലനിർത്തിപ്പോന്നു . 1991 ൽ കപങ്കജാക്ഷനെ 3480 വോട്ടുകൾക്ക് തോൽപ്പിച്ചു തുടക്കം കുറിച്ച വിജയ ഗാഥയ്ക്ക് , 2011 ൽ10,764 വോട്ടിന്റെ ലീഡോടെയാണ് വിരാമമിട്ടത് . അമ്പലത്തറ ശ്രീധരൻ നായരായിരുന്നുഎതിരാളി.  അന്ന് 20,000 ത്തിലധികം വോട്ടുകൾ അമ്പലത്തറ  നേടിയിരുന്നു എന്ന് കൂടിഓർക്കണം. ഇന്നു യു ഡി എഫ് ന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ് ആർ എസ് പി എന്ന് കൂട്ടി വായിക്കുകകൂടി വേണം .  ആർ എസ് പി യുടെ സ്ഥാനാർഥികൾ ഒരിക്കലും ജി കാർത്തികേയന്റെരാഷ്ട്രീയ ജീവിതത്തോടു കിടപിടിക്കുന്നവർ ആയിരുന്നില്ല . 2006 ൽ പ്രൊഫ . ടി ജെചന്ദ്രചൂഡൻ മത്സരിച്ചപ്പോൾ ജി കെ ശെരിക്കും വിഷമ വൃത്തത്തിലായി . 2198 എന്നനേരിയ ഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിനാണ് ആണ് അദേഹം മണ്ഡലം നിലനിർത്തിയത്. പോരിനുപോന്ന എതിരാളിയെ നിർത്തിയാൽ ജി കെ യ്ക്കും ( കോണ്‍ഗ്രസിനും ) അടിതെറ്റുംഎന്നതിന് ഇതിനെക്കാൾ നല്ലൊരു ഉദാഹരണം ആവശ്യമില്ല . ഇപ്പോൾ സി പി എംആയുധമാക്കുന്ന വാദങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്ന് കൂടിയാണിത് .

മുൻപ് ആർ എസ് പി ക്ക് പിന്തുണ നൽകിയിരുന്ന സി പി എം ആദ്യമായി സ്വന്തംസ്ഥാനാർഥിയെ ഗോദയിൽ ഇറക്കുന്ന മത്സരം കൂടിയാണിത് . നായനാർ മന്ത്രിസഭയിൽസ്പീക്കെറും , വി എസ് മന്ത്രിസഭയിൽ നിയമമന്ത്രിയുമായിരുന്ന വിജയകുമാറിന്പിന്നീടുള്ള തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകളിൽ ഒന്നും തന്നെ അർഹിക്കുന്ന പരിഗണന സി പി എംനൽകിയിരുന്നില്ല. കഴിഞ്ഞ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ അദേഹത്തിന് പകരം മുന്നണിപരിഗണിച്ചത് ചെറിയാൻ ഫിലിപ്പിനെയായിരുന്നു . 16,167 വോട്ടിനാണ് അന്ന് ചെറിയാൻഫിലിപ്പ് കെ മുരളീധരനോട് പരാജയപ്പെട്ടത്. എം വിജയകുമാർ പിണറായി പക്ഷത്തിനുഅനഭിമതനായിരുന്നു എന്നർഥം. എന്നാൽ അതെ എം വിജയകുമാറിനെ ഇത്രയുംനിർണ്ണായകമായ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ സ്ഥാനാർഥിയാക്കിയത് വി എസ് പക്ഷത്തിനെയുംഔദ്യോഗിക ( പിണറായി ) പക്ഷത്തിനേയും ഒരേ നുകത്തിൽ കെട്ടുക എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തോട്കൂടിയാണ് . അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ അനുഭവസമ്പത്തും , അഴിമതിരഹിതപ്രതിഛായയും , സർവ്വോപരി 1987 ൽ തിരുവനന്തപുരം നോർത്ത് മണ്ഡലത്തിൽ  ജികാർത്തികേയനെ തോൽപ്പിച്ച ചരിത്രവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനുണ്ട് . പിണറായിയാണ്തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിന് ചുക്കാൻ പിടിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് കോടിയേരി എത്ര ആവർത്തിച്ചാലും വിഎസ് എന്ന ക്രൌഡ് പുള്ളറാണ്  താരമെന്ന് വ്യക്തം .  വി എസ് ന്റെ ജനപിന്തുണവോട്ടായി മാറി , വിജയകുമാർ ജയിച്ചു വന്നാൽ വി എസ് ന്റെ അനിഷേദ്യ നേതൃത്വംഒന്ന് കൂടി ഊട്ടിയുറപ്പിക്കും. വരാനിരിക്കുന്ന 2016 നിയമസഭാ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് ഇടതിന്അനുകൂലമാകുന്നതിനൊപ്പം പിണറായി വിജയൻറെ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി  സ്ഥാനാർഥിത്വം ചോദ്യചിഹ്നത്തിലാകും.

യു ഡി എഫ് സ്ഥാനാർഥിയായി  കെ എസ് ശബരിനാഥൻ മത്സരിക്കുന്നതിനോട്കോണ്‍ഗ്രസിൽ നിന്നുള്ളിൽ തന്നെ വിമത സ്വരം ഉയർന്നിരുന്നു . ആനാട് ജയനെയും  തമ്പാനൂർ രവിയേയും , പി എസ് പ്രശാന്തിനെയും അവഗണിച്ചു ജി കെ യുടെ മകൻ സ്ഥാനാർഥിയായത് സഹതാപ വോട്ടു മാത്രം ലക്ഷ്യമാണ്‌ . ജി കെ യെ തുണച്ചിരുന്നപിന്നോക്ക - ആദിവാസി വോട്ടുകൾ യു ഡി എഫ് നെ പിന്തുണയ്ക്കുമോ എന്ന്കണ്ടറിയാം . സരിതയും മാണിയും കോഴയും കടന്നു കോണ്ഗ്രസ് മണ്ഡലം പിടിച്ചാൽ2016 ഉം കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് തന്നെ അധികാരത്തിലേറും . ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടിയെ വെട്ടി വീഴ്ത്താമെന്നചെന്നിത്തലയുടെ പൂതി അസ്ഥാനത്താവുകയും ചെയ്യും . 

ഇനി ബി ജെ പി യുടെ കാര്യമെടുത്താൽ തങ്ങൾക്കു രംഗത്തിറക്കാവുന്നതിൽ മികച്ച സ്ഥാനാർഥിയെയാണ്  മത്സരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് - ശ്രി ഒ രാജഗോപാൽ . നെയ്യാറ്റിൻകരയിൽകപ്പിനും ചുണ്ടിനും ഇടയിലാണ് വിജയം നഷ്ടമായത് . മത്സരിക്കുന്നിടത്തെല്ലാം മികച്ച വോട്ടു നില അദേഹം നേടിയിരുന്നു . അരുവിക്കരയിലും അതാവർത്തിക്കുമെന്നുപ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാം . വിതുര , പൂവച്ചൽ , തൊളിക്കോട് , മേഖലയിൽ ബി ജെ പി  ക്ക്ശക്തമായ വേരോട്ടമുണ്ട്‌ . ആർ എസ് എസ് പദ്ധതിയായ ''വനവാസി കല്യാണ്‍ ആശ്രമം ''നല്ല രീതിയിൽ പ്രാവർത്തികമാക്കുന്നുണ്ട് ഇവിടെ . സി പി എം ഏര്യ കമ്മിറ്റി മെമ്പർബി ജെ പി യിലേക്ക് ചേക്കേറിയതും പരിഗണിക്കേണ്ട വസ്തുതയാണ് . കഴിഞ്ഞലോക്കൽ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകളിൽ ബി ജെ പി പലയിടത്തും രണ്ടാം സ്ഥാനത്തേക്ക്എത്തിയിരുന്നു . കേരള കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ്‌ അംഗം പി സി തോമസ്‌ ബി ജെ പി ക്ക് പിന്തുണ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചത് കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭയുടെ വോട്ടു ലഭിക്കാനുള്ള സാധ്യതയ്ക്കു ഊന്നൽനൽകുന്നു. വി എച് പി പ്രസിടന്റ്റ് പ്രവീണ്‍ തൊഗാടിയയുടെ ഇടയ്ക്കിടെയുള്ള എസ്എൻ  ഡി  പി നേതാവുമായുള്ള കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച  , ഈഴവ വോട്ടു ബി ജെ പി ക്ക്ലഭിക്കാനുള്ള സാധ്യതയിലേക്കാണ് വിരൽ ചൂണ്ടുന്നത് . മൊത്തത്തിൽ ബി ജെ പി ക്ക്അനുകൂല സാഹചര്യമാണ് അരുവിക്കരയിൽ ഇപ്പോഴുള്ളത് .

ഇടതോ വലതോ ബി ജെ പി യോ - ജയം ആർക്കാണെങ്കിലും കേരളരാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിൽസമൂലമായ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കാൻ പോന്നതാണ് ഈ ഉപതിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് എന്നകാര്യത്തിൽ തർക്കമില്ല.

എഴുതണമെന്നു മനസ്സ് പറയുമ്പോഴും അക്ഷരങ്ങൾ ഒട്ടുമേ അടുക്കുന്നില്ല , അവ അകലെയാണ് . അക്ഷരങ്ങളിൽ സ്വയം അലിഞ്ഞു ചേരാൻ ഞാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുമ്പോഴും എന്ത് കൊണ്ടോ അക്ഷരങ്ങൾ എന്റെ വരുതിയ്ക്ക് നില്ക്കുന്നില്ല . ഞാൻ ചിലപ്പോൾ ഒരു മോശം എഴുത്തുകാരിയാകാം .എഴുത്ത് തീരെ വശമില്ലാത്ത ഒരു എഴുത്തുകാരി .  

അങ്ങേയറ്റം വൃത്തിഹീനമായ ഒരു കീടം ദേഹമാകെ ഇഴഞ്ഞു നീങ്ങും പോലെ തോന്നി എനിക്ക് . 

അതിനു സാമാന്യം വലുപ്പമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു , ഒരു മനുഷ്യനോളം . ഇരു കാലുകളും കൈകളും ഉള്ള അതിനു പക്ഷെ വാലില്ലായിരുന്നു . പരിണാമത്തിന്റെയ് ഏതോ വഴിയിൽ അത് തന്റെ നീണ്ടു രോമാവൃതമായ വാൽകഷ്ണം ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചു പോന്നതായി ചരിത്രം പറയുന്നു. അതെന്റെ ശരീരത്തിന്റെ വക്കിലും വടിവിലുമെല്ലാം യഥേഷ്ടം ഇഴഞ്ഞു നീങ്ങി . ദേഹത്തിനുള്ളിലെ ദേഹി  മുന്പെങ്ങുമില്ലാത്ത വിധം കരഞ്ഞു തുടങ്ങി . അതിന്റെ ആവരണം മാത്രമായ എന്റെ ശരീരത്തെ അന്നുവരെയില്ലാത്ത വിധം ഞാൻ  വെറുക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു . എന്റെ ശരീരം എന്റെ ആത്മാവിന്റെയ് മാത്രം ആവരണമാണെന്നും, അത് എന്റെ മാത്രം സ്വതന്ത്ര്യമാണെന്നും

ഈ ലോകം എന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിയും ?
